Choi Chef in the market 2019

About Matt Choi

Matt Choi and his mother launched Choi’s Kimchi at Portland Farmers Market in 2011. Their business has since grown to a sustainable regional business. They count their roots and the community at the PSU Farmers Market as a key to their success.

As co-founders, they grew the business to award-winning success. Matt was the managing partner, frequently spent long hours at the PSU Farmers Market and served on the Portland Farmers Market board of directors.

Matt’s cheerful spirit, broad knowledge of food production and generous heart made him a wonderful leader and mentor in the local food community. He built close ties with other farmers market vendors, offered support and is remembered for his generous spirit and kindness.

About The Grant

In loving memory of Matthew Choi, Choi’s Kimchi and Portland Farmers Market established The Matthew Choi Farmers Market Vendor Grant to offer awards of up to $1,500 to support new food and farm business entries to Portland area farmers markets.

The grant is open to all food and farm business owners looking to launch or expand at any Portland area farmers market. It aims to reduce financial barriers for new farmers market vendors considering the following priorities:

  • Businesses within their first three years of consistent and regular operation
  • Business owners with a cultural connection to the products produced
  • Businesses led by owners from communities under-represented at farmers markets
  • Applicants for whom this grant would be financially significant
  • Businesses that produce food products that are SNAP eligible
  • Vendors who have applied or intend to apply to one of PFM’s five farmers markets.

Awarded funds may cover expenses directly related to selling at a farmers market, such as equipment for market set up & display, stall costs, vehicle rental fees and more.
