Garofalo also keeps a two-acre trial block where he grows new cultivars from seeds he's collected. This year, Garofalo will bring two new varieties of tart cherries to Portland Farmers Market’s Saturday and Thursday Eastside locations. "Danube", which originated in Hungary, is a large, dark, tart cherry. Its relatively low acid makes it as good for eating out of hand as it is for pies. "Baladin" also originated in Hungary and has the size, dark color, and high acid that make it perfect for pies. Garofalo will package the cherries in one-pound bags and will sell inexpensive pitters, as well.

Garofalo doesn't anticipate a shortage of cherries this year at his farm, and given the farm's high elevation (1,500 feet) and the slow spring, he said they might even have cherries into the first week of September. Besides cherries, Garofalo will also bring Newton Pippin apples (a traditional pie apple Tamiyasu is reviving), peaches, and other tree fruit to the market as they ripen.

Look for the Tamiyasu Orchards booth at the downtown Saturday and Eastside Thursday markets starting
July 17th.
